Boolean Search

Common Boolean operators
OperatorMeaningSearch example
AND Combines different search words silos AND permit
“…” Use quotation marks to search on words together in the order they are written “climate change”
OR Contains either of the search words assault OR injury
NOT Contains the first word but excludes the second word taxation NOT estate
w/n The first word must be located within a specified number of words of the second contempt w/5 court
(…) Use parentheses when a search contains multiple types of Boolean operators contempt AND (radio OR television)
? Wildcard Use a wildcard to search on a word with spelling variations Wom?n - Finds: woman, women
! Truncation Also called stemming. Expands the search to include various word endings object* - Finds: object, objection, objecting, objected
